The first time I saw an ad for a product boasting a new look, but same flavor, I made fun of it: “Who cares about a new look? I only care about the taste!”
I’ve repented.
The reformation of peltononpreaching was way overdue. Like the ads, it’s a fresh, new look, but same content.
First, huge thanks to my friend and newest colleague at Calvary Bible Church, Jordan Sitler. He’s really good at this and I’m not.
Second, I tell students regularly that there are only a few things I can help them with. Those few things make up the bulk of this blog’s material through the years and into the future, Lord willing:
- Most of my non-church teaching in seminaries at the masters and doctoral levels centers on the intersection of hermeneutics and homiletics. I am most interested in practicing and teaching a method that highlights preaching with accuracy. While I occasionally write about what makes for effective communication, I am almost always focused on how to build biblical sermons.
- I chose the Old Testament as my special interest because so many pastors find it difficult or even impossible to preach. I’ve enjoyed so many years of reading about everything I could get my hands on concerning OT interpretation. That included keeping up with my Hebrew studies (Ph.D. studies at Westminster Theological Seminary in OT Hermeneutics and completing a Ph.D. degree at LBC in Biblical studies focusing on Hebrew poetry; not that long ago I wrote about meeting my new friend, Adam Howell, Daily Dose of Hebrew, for daily maintenance). I currently have the privilege of teaching the required Ph.D. seminar, OT Hermeneutics & Theology, for LBC. That keeps me reading, researching, and writing in the discipline I love.
- Finally, because of my formal training in both dispensational and reformed, plus the influence of Timothy Keller’s preaching, I continue to practice and teach a nuanced, Christo-graphic interpretation of all Scripture and, especially, the OT.
So, new look, same flavor.
And same goal that our Lord receive glory in the church and in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 3:21).
